Carbone OxyTech

A spinoff company from the University of Calgary is commercializing a new green technology that provides non-combustion utilization pathways for residual feedstocks, low-rank coal, and carbon-based waste to create valuable products. The company’s back-end technology produces multiple products that address various markets, including organic fertilizers, fuel, lighter hydrocarbons, carbon nanomaterials, microfibers, and valuable metals that are routinely present in waste and low-value hydrocarbon feedstock. OxyTech’s technology uses substantial amounts of greenhouse gas feedstocks annually, turning them into a sustainable and valuable solid commodity. The company has three patents (US Patent No. 10,883,060, PCT/CA2020/051704, and US Patent No. 63/230,353) and has secured GeenSTEM funding in 2020 and a $1 million share investment. It is on track to building the first commercial humic and fulvic acid production plant in Canada for converting low-rank coal into green fertilizer.

NanoWaterTech Inc.

A spinoff company from the University of Calgary is a technology company focused on developing high-volume, naturally derived nanomaterials such as NanoFilter, NanoFlocculant, and NanoSorbcat. These materials are designed to clean up industrial effluents like SAGD water, fracking water, and oilsands tailing. The company owns the proprietary process and nanomaterial formulation, as evidenced by their patent applications PCT/CA2021/File NO. HA-P3089PCT filed in February 2020 and U.S. Patent Application Serial Number 63/231,083 filed in August 2021. Additionally, NanoSoln has secured an Innovation Catalyst Grant 2023 and IRAP, as well as a 0.5 M share investment. With headquarters in Alberta, the company is currently working on building novel mechanical mobile filters that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of industrial wastewater treatment, and can be used in a variety of treatment settings.
