Sonia Mir
Ph.D. Visiting Student
Sonia Mir is pursuing a Ph.D. majoring in Chemical Engineering at the AmirKabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic). Under the supervision of Professor Nashaat Nassar, she is conducting research at the University of Calgary as her Ph.D. study opportunity. Her research is concerned with anti-scaling in gas/oil wells using chelating agents (scale dissolvers) and scale inhibitors. Her experience also extends to plasma technology, where she is currently working on the use of plasma technology to dewater and settle oil sand tailings. As part of her current research, she is working on nanotechnology developments in anti-scaling efforts in gas/oil wells through the use of chelating agents (scale dissolvers) and scale inhibitors.

Valentina Gomez
MSc Visiting Student
Chemical Engineer and Master's student in Chemical Engineering at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS). Throughout her academic and professional journey, she has been actively engaged in the formulation of smart fluids, specifically in oil-in-water magnetic emulsions. This has given her valuable knowledge and practical experience in various areas, including emulsion formulation, rheology, magnetorheology, and ferrohydrodynamics. Additionally, she has been involved in addressing wastewater treatment challenges in the petrochemical industry during her industrial internship. Currently, her research is focused on studying how magnetic emulsions O/W behave under the influence of static and dynamic magnetic fields. She conducts this research under the guidance of Dr. María Daniela Contreras Mateus, Prof. Arlex Chaves Guerrero, Prof. Ronald Alfonso Mercado Ojeda, and Prof. Nashaat Nassar.
